Of Looking, and Looking
Only four inches tall by two and a half inches wide, these intimate gouache paintings invite the viewer to move in close. Manifestations of my marvelings at the intricacies of the natural world, the collection is a record of the small scenes I’ve noticed in my day to day wanderings. Imagination and reality are intertwined as I interpret the patterns, colors, and forms that enliven an easily overlooked tuft of grass or drift of snow. I collect these snapshots of inconspicuous beauty as reminders to slow down, look, and look again at the wonder of the world around me. The phrase “of looking, and looking” comes from Mary Oliver’s poem White Owl Flies Into and Out of the Field. As Olivers suggests, when we shut our eyes it is not without amazement.
